About Electrolysis

Electrolysis was discovered by Dr. Charles E. Michael M.D., Ophthalmologist in 1875. As Dr. Michael was trying to remove ingrown eyelashes, he established the process of electrolysis for permanent hair removal. Since 1875 millions of men and women plagued by unwanted hair have benefited from electrolysis. It has become a practical and affordable way to permanently eliminate unwanted hair.

There are 3 stages of hair growth: anagen, catagen and telegen. It is best to treat the hair in the anagen stage as it is easiest to destroy the follicle at that stage of growth. This is what makes it important to space the treatments every 10-14 days apart during the intitial phase of treatment. As time goes on the number of days between treatments can increase.

Types of Electrolysis

There are three recognized methods of electrolysis:

Galvanic(direct current) electrolysis- the hair is follicle is destroyed by chemical action
Thermolysis- (high frequency) electrolysis- the hair follical is destroyed by heat production.
Blend-a combination of the two above modalities where the hair folllicle is destroyed by both heat and chemical action at the same time.

It is important to have an understanding of the Hair Growth Chart; it determines appointments. When a hair follicle is treated, within 2 weeks new hairs are growing. It is important to realize the hair you see growing immediately after is not from the same follicles that were treated; they are new hairs. Once all the active follicles are treated the area is permanently free of hair growth.
